Handoff/ Continuity

Apparantly it needs Blootooth LE, which is only on new (~<2 yr old Macs)

there was talk (on other forums) previously of whether an LE dongle would work?!? it apparantly didn't with developer versions... does anyone know if/ how it will work between a newish iPad air and a non-LE MacBook

p.s. the MacBook is clearly capable of running Yosemite...

At the minute no. There have been various hacks attempted and no doubt someone will come up with a solution. that will either use a BT dongle or replacement of the BT board in the Mac. I'm on a 2009 Mac Pro so well out of the range. Some links with other links.

I have an iPhone 5s and an iPad Air... Both now on iOS 8.1

I am still struggling to get then to handoff mails, let alone anything exotic like a Keynote...

Thought I had it just a few mins ago, when an e-mail I started on the iPad, opened on the iPhone, but after making changes it didn't want to reverse the direction and I have not been able to find an icon of which several commentators talk when they have reviewed Yosemite.
