Where best to buy iPad with iOS 9?

[link to this post]

Im buying an iPad Air 2 as a Christmas present for a family member. Ill have to set it up and Ive minimal recent Mac experience. I had planned to purchase the iPad from John Lewis but the site suggests they ship with iOS 8. Ideally, Id rather buy a model with iOS 9 already on-board. Would I be better buying directly from Apple UK?

Thanks smile

I wouldn't worry about it. Get the best deal you can and install IOS9 via OTA updates (you would probably have to patch a more recent one anyhow). Takes an hour or so all-in. Very easy.

Failing that, your nearest Apple Store. Ask and there is a chance they will do it for you (but really, it's very easy).

I wasnt worrying until I read some posts about the update going through a never-ending cycle. I dont want to wreck the thing before Christmas morning!

I'll take your word for it, though. Presumably, Id be better updating before installing any apps.?

Well, FWIW, both my iDevices were trouble free.

Yeah, it seems sensible get it all updated then start tricking it out.

What sort of apps do you have in mind?

If you buy it from Apple UK they will set it up and check it out for you in store.

Fairly basic apps that an older person might use: games, shopping, banking. She enjoys photography so I'll add some decent editing apps. Good to know your upgrade went well.

If I buy from Apple it will be via the website rather than an Apple store, though the recipient is near enough to use the store if she has issues in the future. That's one reason I'm getting her an ipad.

If you use POP email then you will want to avoid IOS 9 as it deletes your emails from the device.
Not just from your inbox but sent items, drafts etc too.
Not quite so bad if you have copies on other devices but those who don't are talking about taking out lawsuits against Apple for losing business emails and all sorts.
Apple have tried their hardest to keep the issue under wraps as it is obviously very serious.

IOS 8 was fine but the issue was introduced with IOS 9.
9.01, 9.02 and 9.1 didn't fix it.
It does appear however, that IOS 9.2 beta addresses the issue so fingers crossed the release of 9.2 sorts it.

Oh and PS I believe that the issue also affects IMAP although I can't confirm this as I don't use it myself.

Not for me it didn't, on either device, and the ability to keep lawsuits against Apple (or any other large firm in the US) quiet is negligible.

But ARD is setting a new device, so that should not be an issue at all.

ARD, let us know how it goes.

No problems with emails here.
You and some others may be having email problems this does not mean everyone else is.

I shall keep you up to date. smile

(The recipient could always access her email from the server if it disappeared from the device.)

Yep. Saw that. No disputing that some are having an issue, but and for those it is a pain. But the drama queening every time something like this happens is out of proportion to the instance given the number of units shifted.

And all my attachments are intact.

I've had occasional issues with attachments in OSX Mail, but insofar as it useful the only problem I've had crop up regularly on iOS Mail is losing the smtp password (but on pop, which is generally the same).

What happened next...

[re: ARD] [link to this post]

I said Id report back so heres what happened next

I phoned Apple and was assured that and iPad Air 2 or Mini 4 shipped from them would arrive with iOS9 on board. I therefore decided to buy directly rather than from John Lewis. Whilst I was procrastinating over storage (theres a significant price difference twixt the 16 gig and 64 gig models) I was tipped off that the recipient might prefer an Android tablet. It makes sense really:

1. What little techy experience she has is Android-based via the Kindle Fire range.
2. I know far more about Android and can help if need be.
3. The option to upgrade storage with and SD card for large scale photographs and movies also made an Android the sensible option.

Ive probably spent as much but hey-ho its Christmas and shes been an old trooper all her life. Just hope she likes it!

To anybody buying an iPad for Christmas and wanting to be certain of getting iOS9 buying from Apple online, by phone, or in an Apple store is the best bet.
