As soon as iPhoto is opened after about 1 second, it collapses "iPhoto has quit unexpectedly".
This happens for all 3 users on the mac.

I was surprised to see iPhoto was version 9.4.3 - I had thought that iPhoto 11 had been supplied with the new MacBookPro when purchased.

Ny question is how do I get a working version of iPhoto established on our MacBookPro?
Preferably one compatible with the umpteen photos already taken in the recent past.

I recognise that iPhoto is not all that brilliant - but I would prefer to not have to start again using a different photo package.

I don't think you can (not from a safe source, anyway).

I suspect your choice is to update the OS and get the new Photos app (which is still a work in progress), or find other software.

How about deleting your current iPhoto and reinstalling from the Apple download?

Unfortunately I cannot implement "1. goto /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources"
since there does not seem to be a file or folder called "iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources".
Any ideas?

Also, to follow that advice, with a prudent prior precaution, I would need to copy onto a memory stick the existing versions of both
iPhoto 1.58 GB and
iPhoto Library 10.54 GB

The MBP predicts several (7) hours to compress the iPhoto Library to zip format, which seems excessive.
But I thought that zip format would be quick and help fit copies on my 8GB memory.

Have I gone wrong somewhere?

Hi,

To get to /Contents/Resources you need to go to the iPhoto App. Right click it and select 'Show Package Contents', then you'll see the directory it talks about.

I have now found from Apple Discussions that iPhoto only misbehaves when computer is connected to Internet.
I have no need for "PLACES" and I do not need to use iPhoto's SHARE method for sending photos.
So now I just use iPhoto without connecting to Internet.
Drag any selected photos to a draft email.
Connect to Internet and send email.
Job done, without any need for copies of umpteen photos or of iPhoto.

These sorts of problems may start to occur more often.
If you can and your computer can you should consider updating your OS.
I have found El Capitan excellent.
