MBP OSX 10.8.5

From time to time I want to create a list of text such as about 100 or so people's names.
How can I sort these alphabetically, so that Adams comes before Zaninovich?

I used to be able to do this easily on G4 iMac.

Should I create the unsorted list of names in Text Edit, or Mail or what?

I try to avoid using spreadsheets where possible as my contacts all have different hardware/software compatibilities for spreadsheets.

Many thanks for those suggestions - looks like Text Wrangler is the answer.

Wonder why Apple don't incorporate this feature in their own Text Edit?

Suppose they are too busy counting their shekels?
