IOS update

[link to this post]

Downloaded the update this morning, waited for the "Install now" button with the usual warning "Requires 50% battery or a power source". Greyed out as expected, the battery was only about 30%.

Put the phone on the wireless charger... the button stayed greyed out but with a new message- "Requires 50% battery while wirelessly charging". Left it until charge was over 50% and tried again, off it went and installed the update.

So it seems that IOS15 (at least) doesn't regard a wireless charger as a proper power source... I know how picky Apple are about updating an OS on a low battery and that I can easily just pick it up and interrupt the charge, but I can unplug it from a USB source just as easily! Ridiculous mad

It only took a % or so out of the battery anyway crazy

Mine didn't flag it up either, but it seems it was widespread enough to make it on to the BBC Radio news, I heard about it there:
The update has been made available to iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and later and iPad 5th gen and later.

It is also available to the iPad mini 4 and later versions and the iPod touch (7th generation). Mac users running macOS Monterey are also being encouraged to update.
I think it was a patch rather than a proper update- I'm sure I was on 15.6.1 both before and after. I didn't time it, but it seemed to take longer to prepare than install it!

There are two reasons I can think of for this.

1. Wireless charging is considerably less efficient than charging via a cable; thus Apple are being conservative in their requirements: https://debugger.medium.com/wireless-charging-is-a-d...

2. If wireless charging is not working, Apple’s advice is to restart the phone as it may be caused by a software problem. It’s possible that wireless charging may not work whilst the system software is being updated.

Could be either... I wonder what it does with a power bank? Haven't got one so can't test.

Same here. Seemed to be “preparing” for ever on the iPhone (it’s only a 6s), but the iPad was almost instantaneous (latest Air).

I suspect it is a charge rate thing- wireless is significantly slower, so maybe unable to keep up with the drain.

iPadOS, watchOS and macOS also had similar .1 minor update releases on Wednesday. Ditto Safari. Not for all device models it must be said.

The phone will have no idea whether you are using a powerbank or not.

I think all iPhone, and iPad models running 15.x, and all mac's running 12.5, but only the Watch 3rd Generation was updated. The 4/5/6/7 did not strangely.
