The app store is a busy place... https://www.engadget.com/apple-rejected-1679694-app-...
Last year, iPhone, iPad and Mac users downloaded an average of 747,873,877 apps every week

I have had a look in there, but there is a lot of rubbish, there, just like in other stores, but it does seem more useful than the Ms one for Windows.
the majority of the software I have got on the Mac comes directly from the producer, that is how I like to do things.

I was commenting more on the amount of traffic there than the usefulness or quality of the apps, which I would agree can often be open to question crazy. There is some good stuff in there, but it can take a bit of finding!

I would guess that a lot of people like it because a) they trust Apple not to include code that may do something dubious and b) it's easy- no dmg's to unpack etc and they won't get nagged at by the OS to give an admin password before they're allowed to install or run it for the first time frown

No argument there.

Mac App Store is a lot less key for Mac than the iOS/iPadOS stores, as you can still install software direct from publisher and they can avoid the 30% “apple tax” charges.
