Fedora Asahi Remix 41 for Apple Macs is out

"...and in our humble opinion still looks and feels extremely clunky compared to macOS. If, however, you need to run Linux on the fastest Arm64 kit around, this is the best option. As we described last year, though, it's possible to install other distros this way as well, such as Ubuntu Asahi – but the same limitations around X11-based GUIs apply."

Personally think I shall be giving it a miss. Quite happy with Ubuntu 24.04 for ARM via Parallels here, and remembering of course that Sequoia technically is UNIX too 🤣

There’s no “too” about it. Mac OS is the only freely available UNIX (though there are several POSIX complaints operating systems).

"Freely available"...well yeah OK, as long as you purchase an Apple computer on which to run it. Then I guess it's "free" 😅

Ah OK. Widespread or widely available is completely different to freely available. At least according to Collins and lawyers and stuff...

I knew of course that MacOS was UNIX-based, but I didn't realise that it was certificated as such... ta smile

Have a read of this for context of the certification…

Considering the tortuous nature of the computer industry that all seems reasonable; it's just a change to see somewhere that Apple aren't simply going their own sweet way tongue

Have you heard of Terry Lambert?

Pretty interesting character, especially his tales of working at Apple some years ago to get them POSIX/Unix compliant. It was back in the noughties…

No, I hadn't, I don't really have that depth of interest in the computer industry. Just use their products and pick up the odd snippet here and there.

<Some googling later...>

Sounds an interesting character with an interesting career... I have some idea of Apple's secrecy issues he had to contend with; they brought back memories of working on nuclear weapon projects at Aldermaston crazy
