macOS Tahoe

[link to this post]

I know it is not available for most people yet, but I have had a look at some videos and not sure what to think. I don't like the look of the transparency and I hope when it is launched, they will have a slider to reduce it.

Launchpad vanishing makes little difference to me, I never use it anyway, the new spotlight looks interesting, now with a clipboard manager, I already use copy clip, which is a nice and simple app and does the job.

Someone on YouTube was saying the mouse pointer is a bit strange, seems like the action part is to one side and not on the tip, but could be a bug.

They certainly need to tone down the UI.

You can already turn most of the transparency off in Settings->Accessibility->Display with "Reduce Transparency".

I really don't like many of the UI changes. Making UI that sits over content transparent, making the UI less readable, just because some designer thinks it is pretty seems insane to me.

But at least it isn't as bad as over on the iPhone. There there are far more changes where they've put transparent controls over the top of blurry content (and extended app content underneath bits of UI that they didn't used to). It makes readability of the UI so much worse.

I'm sure they'll fix some of this, but to me the whole idea is fundamentally flawed. I just don't want to be able to see the content of my app through the UI controls.

Neither do I. Transparency might work with the Vision Pro since you are overlaying reality with the virtual one. On a screen it simply looks like bleed through from the reverse page of a book, the effect on readability being much the same.

Hopefully they'll tone it down or at least allow you to select full opacity or as near as makes no difference.

Should not have to go into Accessibility, should have an option in display, maybe they will before it is launched, just a slider would be nice,

I suppose we will get used to it, after all, if I can get used to going from Windows to macOS, I can get used to a few changes.

I was thinking of getting a Iphone, but the cost was putting me off, but then I helped someone at work get onto the work Wi-Fi, she has an Iphone and I thought, nah, I don't think I could cope with the UI.

I suspect what we get in Sept for the release version may be quite tuned compared to the first June developer only beta. The public betas (for those foolish to risk, or have second hardware) start in July.

When iOS 6 moved to iOS 7 the change was a massive jump, and unreadable in many cases as the font was too thin. It took Apple about 2 years to refine and by iOS 9 the look we are used to today appeared. That is the look you see on the current macOS.

If you're used to Android the iPhone will seem strange, as moving from a Linux KDE desktop to a Mac is a bit strange too wink

Have you looked at the ‘Certified Refurbished’ iPhones on the Apple site ? They are near as, good as new (I have tried these and refurbed ones from other sources, and these are WAY better).
I get a new Samsung to use in the new job, it’s horrid. Clunky, illogical, nasty.

They are very good from Apple refurbished. I'm also very impressed with CEX stores if you're looking for something that you can take back to a store for refund/replacement if you have issues; good for students/teenagers with no money.

I always buy Apple refurbished (computers rather than phones). It’s a great money-saver.

We will see, can always go back to Sequoia, I did think about going further back to Sonoma , which I started on when Apple kept turning on their Ai after every update, but they stopped doing that, so I hope they keep it off when I eventually update to Tahoe.

I realise going to another OS seems strange, when I went from Amiga to Windows and from Windows to MacOs, it took a bit of getting used to.
While it was only for five minutes using that Iphone, it just did not seem right.

No, not looked at them, I did have a look at Smarty as they use Reboxed, but the iPhones, even the older ones cost more than I paid for a new Android phone.
Samsung is horrid and clunky, while the UI is supposed to be better than it used to be, I still found them to be clunky.
I have an Oppo and the UI is more or less like standard Android.

This idea of paying over £200 for a phone is a problem for me, certainly paying over £200 for a smartphone.
I don't know why Apple charge so much for their phones.

My Fitbit watch went belly up today, it has been on the verge of giving up for a while, been dropped a few times, why do smartwatch manufactures use stupid strap designs, what is wrong with the normal type of straps we have on normal watches?
Anyway, i am thinking of not bothering and just getting a normal watch, I can't do without a watch, but it don't have to be smart, and I don't really want to pay another £100 or so for a watch.

I did not mind paying a grand for my Mac, well I did mind, but a Pc would not be much less. Even so it was still more than I paid for a computer for years.

I disagree about it not being in Accessibility.

Accessibility isn't just for people with major accessibility challenges. It is full of things that many people would benefit from using, especially as we get older...

I realise that, I started to use the stuff in windows, like making the pointer brighter and larger, strange as it is something I have not had to do on my Mac.
But I think since getting rid of transparency or reducing it is customisation, then it should be in appearance. Maybe they will put a slider in appearance to reduce the transparency, we will see.

The Reduce Transparency option in Accessibility isn't a new thing by the way, it has been there for a long time (I think maybe some 2014).

So it is, not really looked.
Still need to have a slider if they are increasing the transparency.

Well, I have installed it, nothing that exciting about it, the transparency is not too bad, well not for me, not really had a good look around.

For me, it is just a different look, I may use some of the new features, the new spotlight looks interesting.
