Getting fed up with BT, thinking about trying 3G

[link to this post]

My BT line in Leeds is deteriorating. The line has been problematical for a few years now and there is currently a line fault open again. With the monthly line rental I pay BT and the money I pay to my ISP for (currently 1.5meg line, down from 2.5 meg on a LLU line), I am thinking of 3G.

In Spain, many neighbours have either Vodafone or Orange 3G internet, all of which are supplied with router and dongle. I have been looking for something similar in the UK as an alternative to having any BT at all. The best deal I can find is an Edimax 3G router from PCW, then getting a dongle of my choice. Problem there is that we currently use between 30- 40 gig per month and the only tariff I can see is with Orange at £35pm. The biggest problem is that they all want you to sign up for a 18- 24 month contract which I don't really want to do, especially if the service deteriorates.

Can I have some opinions on this idea please?

Sounds like things have gone from bad to worse.

Unless you can test the 3g signal to your location with each provider you may see less than your existing 1.5mb remembering a 3g cell breathes with the number of users on it.

Just my 2p worth

I've spoken to the 3 shop today and they have said if I take the dongle and the speeds aren't any good, it can go back within 3 days. It's the contract that's a killer though frown
