O2 iPhone 4 iOS 4.3 Hotspot

In keeping with O2's iOS 4.2 policy, sharing the 3G connection is only possible via the compressed web idata.o2.co.uk username vertigo and not the full web mobile.o2.co.uk username bypass. My initial speed test was very acceptable, just a shame browsing looks pixelated due to the compression technique.

Has 4.3 been released now? Thought that wasn't happening until tomorrow.

It was released last night (18:00GMT) - a 669MB download.. Can't say I've seen much difference from 4.2.1.

That's a large download! Only 1 thing is of interest and that is the Hotspot. Good thing it is a free update. Just hope three don't charge for using it or there is no point in upgrading.

Safari is supposed to be a lot quicker with JavaScript too.

The Mobile Hotspot is carrier dependant and with O2 you have to have a tethering agreement in place to use it, but I've no idea on 3..

Please post results on Three. I'm considering moving all my O2 products over to Three just to be rid of this horrid compression business.

Ever thought about using a VPN solution to overcome the image compression? I use HotspotShield on occasion (free and works well)..

This isn't going to be easy! Will have to take my laptop somewhere where there is 3G coverage. I.E. not my flat. Should get a chance to test over the weekend.

I know USB tethering works on three (one plan at no extra cost) so shouldn't be any different using the hotspot.

Yep I use VPN for that reason but O2 can't hold the connection for very long in Central London. I bought the Three MiFi yesterday - the connection is stable but the speed is too slow so I guess congestion isn't going away any time soon.

I would have expected better!

Speedtest on the iPhone in the same location using the speedtest.net app gives 3333kbps down and 1635kbps up.

One must be wrong. Don't have a cable with me to test over USB so will have to try that another time.

The speed changes a lot depending on the server used!
