Would You Consider Replacing Your Home Broadband with 4G

[link to this post]

Hi Guys, new poster here.

I'm currently with Three on AYCE and can get as much as 5.5MBs DL speeds and uploads speeds of not much lower.

At the moment I can stream HD content via iPlayer and tvcatchup via tethering from my mobile to my laptop, which is quite good. Ping times are still very high though.

I recently found out that Samsung will be installing Three's 4G network and that it should be operational some time in the second half of next year (until then they are going to install DC-HSPA which will double current speeds).

When 4G does come along, won't it effectively compete with the established home broadband providers? The ping times will come down and Three's data allowance is already larger than some other home broadband suppliers.

Thanks

Al

If everybody prices 4G like Orange (EE) do then it will not be a competitor.

Using a package like 3 All You Can Eat data is fine provided you are in a well covered area (I have 3 AYCE on my phone and coverage is very marginal) and provided that you leave the phone all the time, the person with the phone is the only internet user or you invest in a data dongle.

4G cannot compete with a 78Mb/s FTTC connection which is shared by multiple family members, SKY box, Smart TV etc.

Obviously different if only one internet user, no broadband coverage etc but these are special cases.

BT Infinity 2 - IP profile 77 / 20 - super fast!
Previously BE Unlimited - 21,000 Download 1,200 Upload but then moved house - 6,500 Down, 1Mb/s up - gutted!
Ex <n>ildram , been to SKY MAX - 15,225 Download

I replaced my land line with Three 3G in 2011, my main issue now is what I replace my E367 Dongle with when that contract expires in March 2013 or move it over to PAYG for backup use only and then consider what to replace my Samsung Galaxy S2 with when that renews in May 2013.

I'm hoping by then there will be some hardware which is both 4G and HSPA+ 42 compatible, particularly if I'm going to be signing a two year contract, but the current 4G tariffs and allowances make 4G a non starter.I think the Galaxy S4 will be out by then, so I'll wait to see if that's the one to go for.

I'm currently considering replacing the Dongle and another older PAYG Vodafone mobile with a SIM free Nexus 4 and get the Three card only AYCE and tethering tariff for £25/month. Then I'd have two smartphones, one for my pocket and one to leave in the home office.

Where is this tariff? I thought the one plan was the only one that you could have.

Or do you mean a sim only deal?

I mean the SIM only tariff on the One Plan for £25 month which allows tethering and buying a SIM free phone so I'm not necessarily tied into some hardware for two years....... the hardware is the issue really but I'm sure there will be several choices by next spring which will have 3G and 4G connections.

I rarely keep the phone my contract came with. I'll be swapping my Xperia T for the Xperia V when it comes out this month, simply because it is pentaband LTE 4G, which is more future proof.

Although, I'm hoping there is the option to disable 4G in case there are issues with battery life.

Has anyone managed to find a router that is compatible with DC-HSDPA on 3?? I can't get fixed line broadband so totally rely on mobile broadband. I've got the TP-Link MR3420 with a Huawei E367 connected to it which provides average speeds of 10mbps (I'm less than 1/2 mile from the antenna with clear line of sight). But I purchased the Huawei E3256 with DC-HSDPA technology and it can reach 25Mbps! Only trouble is, it's not compatible with the TP-Link router.
There is a Netgear MBR1310 which is DC-HSDPA compatible and doesn't require a dongle (it has a SIM slot) but I can't seem to find one anywhere. Does anyone know when they will be releasing it. Even Netgear can't tell me!
Now I've seen what DC-HSDPA can do, I'm keen to use it but can't cope with just plugging it into the side of the laptop. I've even tried sharing it over the network but came up against problems with my Vonage VOIP adapter so I imagine there will be similar problems with game consoles etc...
Any help would be appreciated, otherwise I will just ahve to sit and wait to see what gets released.
Mark

I just recycled my S3 and got £350 for it - I put that into getting an Iphone 5 ....

I agree with you.

I just sold my S3 on ebay for £395 and I am off today to get a Nexus 4 to see how I get on with that.

Hi, I've got the same TP-Link router and E367 too & done several firmware upgrades during my time of ownership.

It appears that my version of the MR3420 is v.1 and only v.2 will support 4G type dongles. Check para 5 on the link below.
http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/3g-comp-list/?mode...

Maybe TP-Link regard the E3256 as 4G LTE type and it won't be supported by the MR3420 v.1.

It firms up my decision to replace the E367 and router with a smartphone next spring, possibly the Nexus 4.

LOL also here. That sequence doesn't seem to hold water.

More seriously - have I got this wrong? I thought the i5 supports the EE frequency range, but no other network will be in that range, they will all be in the lower one. Or does the i5 support both ranges?

And other smartphones will only support the low one?

?
Wrong side of bed this morning? Or just had a sense-of humour bypass? Or just lacking one in the first place?
That's an all new level of saddo.
A very grown-up comment.

Just to recap:-
You had two S3s.

Sat 01-Dec-12 - sold one for £350 to put towards an iPhone5.
Tue 04-Dec-12 - sold the other for £395 and went to buy a Nexus 4.
Sun 09-Dec-12 - returned a (the?) Nexus and bought an iPhone5.

My post clearly treated that as a humorous side-issue and proceeded specifically to something sensible. I'm sorry if it upset you.
And yes 1800mhz - which EE just sold a chuck of to 3. But they aren't letting it go until September 2013 now so they can monopolise the market. That's the latest Ofcom said they can keep it till. And then like EE 3 will be getting Huaweii to install 4G kit with 1Gbps back hauls
Would I be right in thinking the Nexus doesn't support 1800MHz?

The problem with MiFi devices is that I have yet to see one that supports DC-HSPA+. Plus they don't have any cable connections which I need for some devices. I'll keep looking though. There is a device but it costs £700+ and I'm sure when 4G becomes more common the price will rapidly fall.

I've noticed that before. I had one of the TP-LINK routers about 10 months and had to have it replaced a month ago. I got the V1 both times. I can't work out how you can specifically purchase the V2. It seems like pot luck. Unless it's for specific regions? I suppose 4G wasn't on the go when they first released the router in the UK.

When you say you are going to replace your modem and router with a smart phone, do you mean you will somehow use the smartphone to distribute a connection around your house? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Yes that's right, use the smartphone for the home network. I'm already doing it with a Galaxy S2, but had the dongle first in March 2011 to check out 3G and when it did indeed prove to be faster than ADSL at my home, dumped the ADSL line but also got the S2 later in about May 2011 with unlimited allowance because the dongle has only 15GB/month allowance.

So my next move is probably going to downgrade the dongle to PAYG for emergency use when the two year contract expires in March 2013 and buy a SIM free smartphone which also has 4G and HSPA+ 42 support, then get a "One Plan" SIM card for £25/month which is only about £8.50 more than the Dongle account which only has 15 GB allowance.
