Using Three 3 3-2-1 SIM in Mi-Fi

[link to this post]

Does anyone know if Three allow use of a 3-2-1 PAYG SIM in an (unlocked) Mi-Fi type device? I currenly have a £5/month 1GB T-Mobile data SIM-only contract, but rarely use more than 200MB in a month, so could save some money here. Can't find any specific T's & C's on the Three website but then finding anything on their site isn't that easy smile

From 3 Pay As You Go Price Plans

"Pay As You Go plans do not allow tethering. If you would like to tether, you will need to choose a Pay Monthly plan and / or an Add-On that does allow tethering."

Unfortunately that isn't the case, they look at the browser headers.
If they notice a browser which isn't for a phone, they'll block the internet access.

okay so with all the main browsers having mobile versions, how is that still possible?

The headers are different smile But also they can tell from traffic and sites visited and volume of data.

There is no PAYG data on Three. They have one-month bundles, but not a single PAYG offering for data suitable for use in a mifi.

I have a couple of 1-2-3 PAYG sims that can and do get blocked after varying amounts of time when used in a tablet, or in the 3G dongle in my car stereo (used to get traffic info etc, never calls or browsing).

So far, taking the sim out and putting it into a phone, then making a call, resets it. But how long for, I don't know.

I wish I could find ANY uk network that does allow PAYG data without buying a block of data that expires, or paying ten times a sensible price, or suffering from hopeless coverage (GiffGaff/O2)

What about the AAISP data sim? www.aa.net.uk/telecoms-mobile-data.html

£2/month regardless then 2p/MB via the Three network.

It is more expensive than the Three 321 Payg sim, but they won't care what device you use the data from.

the tethering detection is mostly based on APN settings

if three DPI Thinks you're tethering you get a Netspeed of under 1mb/s but no block (depends on the load of the local mast and if your on PAYG or contract) this applies to mostly Any Unbranded phone with a Three sim in it (the tethering allowance will not move be it PAYG or contract)

if you have a Three Branded phone the phones are norm setup to have 2 APNs, 1 for mobile and 1 for USB/Hotspot tethering (instant can't tether page on PAYG unless you buy an add on If using a Three branded phone, also data used on the mobile phone should not use the Tethering data up as its on a separate APN on the phone)

o2 uses IP based tethering detection (so using torrent without a VPN active can set off the tethering detection as there could be Peers in the swarm that only a windows or games console would normally connect to, happens a lot on giffgaff users who uses O2 tethering detection)

I have an unconnected Moto G 4G with a three PAYG SIM now (it started off with an O2 SIM, only one I could get quick) and the Moto G knows the two APNs - "tethering" separate to "browsing" I think they're labelled.

James - plusnet unlimited fibre - 2 Jun 14 - 470m - Sync 55/9.4 (BT was 51/9.8)

On android they cant tell unless it's really heavy usage

Not correct. They can, and do. It has nothing to do with your usage.

It's more sophisticated than that.
