BT Mobile

[link to this post]

Moved over to BT mobile 3 weeks ago and I am very impressed. One thing I have noticed though, when calling my mates on EE is the call is never a HD voice one.

I've got strong 3G coverage, so have they. Tried it in many areas.

Do BT not have access to HD voice then on EE?

Yeah, they have access to HD Voice, I always get that on my S4 on 3G. Quite a marked difference in call quality when it drops down to 2G though lol

I have a work Lumia 520 on EE so tried a test call yesterday and on the second call, HD voice kicked in.

Just a shame it doesn't seem to be every call like when I was on 3.

To be fair, on Three the phone wouldn't have dropped back to 2G and thus lost the HD voice. I think perhaps the biggest issue is that HD voice isn't cross network yet :/

I don't even know what HD voice on a mobile is.

Easiest way to think of it is like using Skype when both callers use headsets. That sort of call quality and clarity, just over the mobile network.

Very true, saying that I know for a fact my one friend would have had strong 3G like I did.

Are you on O2 Robertos??

Same quality as FaceTime audio but using normal phone calls. Currently you have to be on the same network and both in a 3G coverage and not drop down to 2G whilst in the call.

Not all handsets support. iPhones from 5 onwards so.

All UK networks ( EE, 3, Vodafone and O2 ) now support but EE was first when orange, and O2 was very recently.

Hope is that with 4G voice calling the networks will inter operate.

EE 4G Extra with 4GB, with a Sony Z3. (Full size, not a Compact)

Before that I was on O2 3G. Feature phone >> Nokia N900 >> Samsung Galaxy SIII.

LOL smile.

I know even less about either aspect of that. At least I use a mobile smile.

Nothing on the rumours on this or other forums, last I read on another forum was rumour for this summer, so a few months to go.

I wonder how many handsets will support volte at launch.

Ha!

In truth it won't appear on data devices and I don't expect many phones to show any controls, it's all under the covers this stuff.

personally I think the handset makes more difference than the bitrate of the carrier.

e.g. I found voice calls better quality on my s3 on O2, vs on my s5 on EE (s5 has lower quality speaker), and apparently O2 use some kind of half bitrate, I also cannot tell the difference between HD calls and normal calls on EE.

My work Lumia 530 is probably the best phone I have ever used for voice quality yet I can still tell when the call connects as HD.

On my iPhone 5s the difference between a standard call and a HD voice is massive. The call quality on EE is good anyway, even on 2G but HD is a big step up on that handset.

As for O2, always found their call quality shocking, although they have rolled out HD voice now.

Never had an issue quality wise with Three or Vodafone either.

Never considered Vodafone in need of HD voice to be honest, i've always had great call quality with them.

EE and Vodafone standard voice is very similar - ie good, and no real difference between 2G and 3G. This is probably because in the 2G days in the mid 1990s they all rolled out the higher quality codec, which took more network capacity to deliver but made clearer calls. O2 was always the worst.

HD Voice on all networks is significantly better, and hopefully as 4G voice calling rolls out (VoLTE) then we will get HD calls between networks.
