Re: B612 speed limited? - any faster 4G modems?

Those are good numbers for signal reception, I assume they are from Band 3 (1800mhz) ?

It depends how Three have things set up, and there are more knowledgable experts on other forums, however from my basic understanding, the mast will chose not to bother aggregating the 15mhz of B3 with the 5mhz of B20 until significant throughput.

Other networks have their masts configured differently. I get CA on Vodafone between B20 (10mhz) and B1 (10mhz) as soon as I start transferring data. My Netgear Aircard shows the 4G+ logo very soon.

Now that EE is £34pm for Unlimited Data you may want to compare that to the cost of the FTTC service plus its contribution to your landline costs.

My total costs with Plusnet are around £36 a month, so its very close smile

Three = £14 a month + Plusnet @ £17 a month = £31 a month.

I've found that earlier today I was getting 4G+ kicking in and band 20 aggregation kicking in at ~50mb of throughput which I've not seen before. It seems to usually hold off to ~90ish before kicking over but my friday night test showed that no matter what I did it'd not kick into 4G+ so I can only put that down to utilization.

As has been said I've got a very good path to the tower. I've considered putting the antenna outside but it seems like hassle that wont be worth it considering the signal I'm getting already.

Balanced = ~145. DOWN / 50.0 UP
PlusNet = 33.5 DOWN / 10.0 UP
Three = 120.0 DOWN / 40.0 UP

Three appear to have some complicated logic going on that gives certain traffic 4G+ speeds at certain times of the day / or certain utilisation thresholds.

For example right now using speedtest.net, fast.com or thinkbroadband test files I cannot get 4G+ to come on.

Go to youtube (on same machine) and select a 4k stream, 4G+ comes straight on.

Tried this about 20 times to try and see any link.

However, now is probably peak time (i'm getting speed within a single speed test bouncing from 5mb - 25mb).

Repeat the tests above later at night and everything flips in to 4G+ mode. One thing I see is that 4G+ only stays on for burst, it's never on constantly even when massive downloads are happening.

I assume that's Plusnet ADSL with phone line? As £17 is cheap.
Shame Three at my home is around 10mbps on a good day.

Perhaps the network considers speed testing a waste of time. Maybe complain to Ofcom that they are mistreating your traffic.

Its a fiber connection. It was discounted and with paying upfront for the telephone the monthlies work out cheaper

I tested this and it seems to be happening for me too. Youtube would get 4g+, actual downloads would get 4g+ but speedtests would not.
Exactly 9pm hits and I can get 4g+ on speedtests... odd!

I'm not really fussed as long as my day to day stuff works. I was just pointing out that Three's way of managing 4G+ on their network isn't as simple as at first it might seem and does seem to vary depending on other factors like how the connection is being used and time of day before deciding whether to 'turn it on'.

It's good to see that speed tests don't get priority, however normally companies work in the interests of their own image rather than the customers so in this example it must be quite rare for ISP's not to do everything the can to 'chase the number'
