Any suggestions?

[link to this post]

I'm currently with Talktalk download speed about 110 mbps on GFAST. However my upload speed is really bad about 9mbps. I'm not happy with the upload speed. I live in the somerset country side here in the UK. I don't have any other options available. Do you think 4G is a good idea. I'm thinking about getting Smarty 4G sim with unlimited data and i'm planning to buy a router CPE. PC and laptop my main devices. I checked coverage and it says i can get good signal. What upload speeds can i expect any idea? and download?. Or Should i stay with GFAST talktalk and not risk it losing money smile.

You could buy a pay as you go SIM for the various providers and do some speed tests to see what they are like in your area. The variations are so enormous that it would be impossible to guess without actually trying it out.

Once tested you can get an unlimited contract with whoever comes out best for your needs.

As Ian says. However I would steer clear of the MVNOs, as they rent capacity from the mainstream providers. Smarty is in fact owned by Three.

As the MVNOs tend to be cheaper and more flexible, something has to give. I don't have facts and figures, but would expect it to be the throughput at busy times.

Bear in mind that unlike (decent provider) landline broadband, the throughput from your local mast can vary hugely over 24 hours. When I was considering ditching my landline completely I did the kind of testing Ian suggests deliberately over the Christmas/New Year period when I expected load to be high.

Home mobile routers are also way behind the curve wrt fast speeds, as the main market for the latest chips is the mobile phone one. My router is a quite early one, so quite slow, but it is good enough to handle the downstream for my Sony TV and upload for my security cameras.

See my sig for speed test results and note the big difference between phone and router, and the wide range on both all tested indoors at home.

Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro, 4G max 165Mbps down, 24Mbps up on Three Mobile, and B311 4G router, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

If you're in range of Gfast then you'd probably get the full sync on FTTC, so a 'downgrade' to 20Mbps upload might be worth looking at.

Actually even 20mbps upload still too slow for me. I upload many gigabytes to youtube and need 50mbps minimum. But i guess i'm not gonna get that with 4g laugh especially in the UK.

Used to get around 43 Mbps up, but that was back in the day (2017-ish) on B3 with EE, and as we had just had a local mast upgrade and were/are rural there was almost no mast contention. I haven't checked recently.

It's worth a try, I get very good upload on EE on 4G especially off peak in a rural area.

However if you're really hammering the data you might fall foul of "fair use" limits on unlimited data. I went with an EE small business sim only which I've read has a 1000GB limit
