1pmobile data has traditionally been very expensive, so this is a good offer for them.

However, you don't want to exceed the cap.

If you go just 1Gb over the 500 limit in the UK or the 14 limit in the EU, you will be charged £10 extra.

That's incorrect information. Once 500GB data been all used or 14GB data roaming been all used, the internet will cut off. There is no £10 extra charged and also auto renewal next month to reset data allowance.

The £10 charged only applied to account auto-top up but I always disabled it to avoid £10 charged. Never get charged £10 when I use over 14GB in abroad last year as the internet just cut off (last day before I went home - thanks god for that) honest 14GB are fine for 2 weeks just for using data roaming because most hotel have free wifi. I don't use 500GB one. I use 25GB data for £10 a month. Don't need 500GB for mobile.

It looks quite consistent with what you just told us You WILL be charged £10/GB unless you disable auto top up.

That's definitely not my experience of running out of data allowance on 1pmobile. And it's not what 1pmobile say will happen

Right, so you are saying I am giving incorrect information because you switched off autotopup and because you used hotel wifi.

I am saying that my experience differs from yours, and I never stay in hotels.

Whilst I've found them reasonably priced in UK, if you spend too long in EU there is a £1/day charge!

I pay year upfront 1 Year SIM - 250 mins, 250 SMS & 2GB data every month for 12 months. One-off charge £20. That is equivalent to £1.66 a month!!

Most people don't need 500GB mobile data and £25 a month is a waste of money. I can understand for people who don't have existing FTTC/FTTP services they may be dependent on mobile data. Or in case your connection was down. But this is very rare and when it happens will not happen for more than a couple of minutes.

For me 2GB is more than enough considering many places have WiFi hotspots for free. If my connection was ever down I can use my data allowance or connect to a WiFi and quickly do some work if needed.

The EU naturally has very good internet access. I have visited Bulgaria in 2017 where there was full fibre available. Everywhere across the city has WiFi available. You don't need data roaming when you visit a country in the EU as generally you get WiFi access in most coffee shops, restaurants, shopping malls, etc. You can use phone calls using online social media networks like Facebook, Skype, etc.

People need to think and decide if paying this amount a month is necessary and rational.

It can cost me up to £45 a trip in charges, that's more than I would expect to pay for coffee in EU as I make my own, as well as being in excess of anything I pay for coffee, but more to the point, it's an excess charge which doesn't need to be made. Their excuse for this charge is "the SIM is primarily for use in UK", well that's fine, just look at my usage and even in a extreme case 60% in a year is in UK, and most years it's a lot higher use in UK.
p.s. Another thing you can get caught out on, if you use more data in EU than you usually use in UK, they reserve the right to charge 1p/MB, so for instance, if you pay £10 month for the 10GB package, but only use 4GB in UK, go to EU and between 4GB and 10GB you could get charged extra even though you pay for 10GB.

I'm not sure you got my point. For starters, if you are making your own coffee when in the EU then you are not the norm.

The question was comparing the £1 per day to the cost of a coffee in a coffee bar or restaurant or hotel/B&B. Possibly several of those per day.

Like thousands of Brits I have travelled extensively across the EU (and the wider world) in motorhomes.

As EE charge £2.47 per day for EU roaming unless you buy the £25 per month roaming add on then I would say 1p mobile is not bad at £1 per day. You can buy the add on for just one month but if going for less than 11 days it is cheaper to pay per day.

That's a very interesting question. Generally, a cup of coffee uses 15 grammes of coffee beans.

The market price of coffee beans is about £1.50 per KG, but by the time they have been roasted, packaged and retailed, that is more like £2.50. It's much the same in the EU as in the UK.

So the cost of a cup of coffee is about 3.75p. Plus the cost of heating the water, which is about 0.01KWh, costing 0.2p. Let's be generous and round up to 4p.

That's the cost, mind. There's a markup at every stage. Retail, coffee beans cost more like £10 per kilo, making a cup about 15p

I have a suspicion that you were referring to the charge for a coffee in a cafe, rather than the actual cost of a cup of coffee.

Just to be clear, this is not some theoretical 'what if', it's what 1p customer services have told me I'll be charged for the second 45 days of a EU visit if I use my full 10GB 'contract'. This leaves me considering going back to the 'bad old days' of 10+ years ago when I would buy a local sim in a supermarket.

In the end I decided to go down the 'local sim' route for most of my data, this meant I 'only' paid £30 extra (£1/day after 60 days), just to keep my phone on to recieve calls and use minimal amount of data on the 1p sim.
For my next long trip I'll give myself more time to check on which operator gives a good deal on roaming. GF meanwhile is on Lebara and didn't have any extra charges, although she doesn't use a lot of data, and used the phone more for calls and texts.
