Aerial issue

[link to this post]

Signal strength is my problem.

GL.iNet GL-XE3000 (Puli AX) is the mobile router.

Coverage checkers reveal that good-ish signals are available from EE or 02 SIMs or their MVNOs, although experience doesn't really confirm it. Not sure that it has much if any bearing on the issue but there is a gas substation and an electrity sub station within a few metres.

The router is going to be located, short term, at a single storey house. Using my Pixel 8 Pro, with WiFi switched off, to survey the site indoors and outside reveals varying signal strengths with fluctuations of roughly -110 dBm and 20-ish ASU Other people have complained about poor or non-existent mobile reception at the same location.

Usage is straightforward ie surfing/email/streaming TV for two people & TV's

Tricky questions: what sort of signal improvement should I expect using an aerial to boost the signal? Type of aerial roof/pole mount external/internal?

-110dBm is pretty typical indoors 4G signal strength, likely the target for most of the operators. Different house construction will cause attenuation to differ. Phones and routers often have different quality antenna, so it is a good idea to survey before you install using the hardware you expect to use.

cellmapper is a useful website that CAN show the local cell sites for a location, but this is dependent upon enough people (with Android phones) running the Cellmapper app to update the database.

The mobile network coverage maps and the Ofcom maps are generally regarded as marketing fiction frown
