Wireless network hogging?

[link to this post]

My housemate's laptop hogs our wireless network.

Whenever she wirelessly connects to the network (via a Netgear DG834GT), I basically get (almost) kicked off. Pages start to take several minutes to load instead of less than seconds.

Disconnecting her laptop from the network instantly speeds my connection up to normal. The speed doesn't double, as you might expect if we both used the same bandwidth; the difference is between giving up on a small page loading and a large page loading instantly.

Is there some way to throttle bandwidth, or make sure we both get the same, via IP address, in the router? Is there something I'm missing?

I think she has 802.11-b, while I have 802.11-g.
