RJ11 cable length - what's the max?

[link to this post]

Hi folks,

What is considered the max length an RJ11 telephone cable that can be used?

My master socket is in the hall downstairs, i want to run an extension upstairs and have my pc there, but the cable length is going to be over 30 mtres in length

Is that likely to cause any problems? (assuming here that i've used decent quality cable, and it's not running by mains cables!)

Any guidance appreciated

Would it be possible to leave the router at the master socket and run network cable to the PC? I expect that would be much more robust

Yes indeed,
I was just curious as to whether rj11 could be used over that distance as the cable is somewhat thinner than cat5

Thanks for the reply though

i think it all depends on the quality of the signal when it hits the filter a tempramental signal on a short rj11 cable is just going to be worse over a long cable by using a router you are amplifing the signal at the router and will be much more stable or just go wireless no cable at all then

You didnt say what type of Modem - if its a USB modem then you the cheapest option is to extend the RJ11.

This company do all sorts of phone and adsl wiring goodies. They have listed a genuine BT 30m adsl extension kit - so 30m must be ok (it does use Cat5 cable though)
