I know this has been asked thousands of times before, but I've a couple of questions.
I'm looking at getting wireless network coverage for a friends house of about 5,000 sq/ft with thick walls (yes, a bit of a mission).
Wireless coverage is a bit poor, so looking at the options.
I've seen the following:
1. Wireless repeaters
2. HomePlug wireless
3. HomePlug wired, with a wireless access point plugged in
What do people think is the best option?
Essentially, wireless is key, as there are 3 wireless laptops in the house and a PS3 coming soon.

That's an interesting idea
But, getting power to them might be a problem.

if you can't run ethernet then either wireless vertically up to the loft, powerline ethernet or something. Power over ethernet is yet another option.
TBH powerline ethernet is prob the simplest.

So do you think option 2 or 3 is the best choice?
Also, there's so many powerline products out there now, is there one that is supposed to be better than the rest?

would prefer 3 personally, as it divorces the powerline bit from the wireless bit and may be cheaper to replace if part of it fails. The Devolo powerline stuff looks better than the Solwise from very limited playing.

I've just found out from the electrician, that the house we were going to use the dLAN solution in, has 3 separate rings/phase electric (quite a big house).
Does anyone know if this is a problem? Do I need to combine the 3 separate rings/phases together with a dLAN on each one, or can it pass through them all?

depends if its rings or phases really. 3-phase electric (rare in houses) means there are transformer windings between the phases, 3 rings come off a common single phase feed.
The Devolo.co.uk website from memory covers this issue.

I took "Phase coupling operates without an installation of a phase coupler " to mean you don't have to bridge phases with an ethernet cable between two devolo plugs. Buy a pair and try it ?

Opps, need to make another correction. Apparently, it is 3 ring, not 3 phase!?
How does this effect things?

JFDI, you could have it installed by now !
The ring mains sounds more credible, they all connect at the same place and will probably work. Cat 5 is simpler

you only have to cable up to the repeaters, 100m of ethernet cable goes further inside buildings than the wireless signal does.

I don't have money and time to waste trying things out, especially if there's community forums like this full of people that have potentially used them and the experience...

Do you know the environment of the install? No. So how can you comment that using cable is 'easier'!?
Don't you think I'd thought of that first. It's simply not an option.

Cable is always easier to manage and use than wireless. May be a bit of effort to pull it in especially if the foresight was lacking to use conduits but once there you can forget about it.

I agree, cable is easier and I have it here in my house, however, due to logistics, the size of the house and the locations that need to be covered, wireless and cable isn't a viable option.
I'm now looking to get 4 dLAN adaptors and 1 wireless repeater (already owned) on the end of one of the dLAN's.
Just deciding on which dLAN adaptor now, as everyone seems to be making them now!? Price isn't really an issue, it's more a case of quality, reliability. Devolo seem good, but then there's the usual suspects such as D-Link, Netgear etc?

the best form of advice may not be what you want to hear. In the time you've been pontificating you could have bought a pair, tried them out and returned them if they didn't work. Our opinions, based on no knowledge of the layout, are worth about what you pay for them
It's often quicker and easier just to give it a try, put a router on one end of a homeplug set and go to the other and determine the packet loss over a few minutes.
