Help getting my 20mb to work

[link to this post]

I was recently upgraded to 20mb on VM and have found that my current Ethernet setup (my wireless signal is awful and I would prefer to stay with Ethernet for now), which always ran near to full speed on the 10mb line is having obvious trouble with the 20mb.

After many tests, it seems like Im stuck at 11mb. My set up:

Surfboard SB4200 modem
Netgear WGR614v6 (being used with ethernet and not as the wireless router as I said above)
Cat 5e cables.

Tried with both a Realtek RTL8139/810x Fast and a Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT network cards.

In my router status I get the following:

WAN 100M/Full 2279683 14355850 0 149130 3695769 1 day 09:01:25
LAN 100M/Full 6713930 4661546 0 3680969 160297 1 day 09:01:25
WLAN 11M/54M 34251 0 0 0 0 1 day 09:01:25

Now, the 11mb here is obviously my problem, but I don't know which piece of equipment it's referring to.

During the tests I did with the a cable running directly from modem > PC I didn't get the full speeds either so Im assuming it's not a router problem, although Im still curious if the router can deal with the speed in case it was just havinga slow period during the times I checked.

So can someone tell me WHAT needs to be changed here? Do I need a new modem? Router? NIC card? Maybe I just need to change some settings somewhere?

thanks.

you're confusing WLAN and WAN... the WLAN you are looking at is your *wireless* connection, the 11/54 refers to either 802.11b or 802.11g. you need to look at the WAN entry.

Like Bipolar bear, I think there is some confusion here, some of it is mine, I'll admit. Now tell me this, if the bit you think is not working at full speed started going twice as fast overnight, what difference would you report here?

Well part of my question was basically 'is this (11/54) the part that is slowing me down?' if it isn't then my question is...what is?

I just want to know what's stopping me from getting the 20mb here...and seeing as my speed only rose from an average of 10mb to around 11mb after the upgrade I just assumed that 11/54 had something to do with it.

no the 11/54 is not slowing you down.... as such.... IF you are on Wi-Fi THEN it may slow you a little asumming you connect at 11megs and the router is going at full speed ON THE DSL SIDE

What you are describing is not getting full fat 20megs from VM, call thier CS team OR run some line checks, are you too far away from thier gear / exchange, little box in the street etc. IS everyone in your street cabled up to VM? What speeds are they seeing and as ever REMEBER ...... it's "UPTO 20 meg" which is optimal line conditions etc etc etc

hope that makes a little sense?

Well, I stick with my question, what would you expect to see there?

So what makes you think it is going at 11Mb/s? Sorry to be a pain here, but if it ain't broke, trying to fix it might not produce satisfaction.

Is this 11Mb your actual download speed, or is it the speed your modem reports you are sync'ed at?

If it is the actual download, what is the sync speed?

We need the sync speed and line stats from your modem - Attenuation and SNR/SNRM are the important ones. Then we can try to see if things can be improved. If you cannot find them, try here and see if your modem is listed and get the instructions.

As the others said, the 11/54 only applies to the wireless link. Irrelevant if you are using the ethernet link.

At a guess the OP is on VM cable BB so SNR/Attn stats are irrelevant.

The router will more than likely be able to handle the speeds. The only problem you might have would be if you were using a bit torrent type of application which can cause routers to crash.

You have checked with VM that you have actually been upgraded ??

Could be down to local congestion or from reading the posts in the VM cable forum it could be down to the network starting to struggle.

The 11/54 refers to the wireless speeds the router is capable of. As there would appear to be not traffic you don't use it so I wouldn't be concerned.
