Linking Win 98se to Netgear DG843 DSL Router

I want to link my old 450hz Win 98se puter to my DG834 router,I'm not techie at all and the thought of opening the puter case scares me rigid.
So I've bought a USB ethernet adapter,while I'm waiting for it to arrive I thought I'd have a look on the net to see how to if i'm in for a nightmare setting it up but I couldn't find any useful info.
Has anyone ever set up win98 like this please ?

get an ethernet adapter to fit INSIDE the pc, if there is not one already. this costs

Thanks IanD, It comes with a CD rom. it's setting up networking on win98se I'm worried about.

if this is your only pc then the only change you really need to make is to set your internet connection to "never dial a connection" when switching to the router.

I'd be more worried about setting up USB on win98. For any and every OS I would use a PCI Ethernet card if at all possible. For win98 doubly so in preference to USB

Setting up TCP/IP for Internet use should not be any trouble on anything from Win95 onwards.

It's not the only PC, I have a desktop in my son's room and a laptop we use in the living room , both of these are about 2 years old running XP, all of them running off the router no problems.
My old desktop running win98se is just laying around doing nothing and I thought it would be an idea to put it in the spare room for thr grandchildren to use when they stay over.
The usb adapter seemed an easy and quick solution to linking it to the router.
I guess the CD rom that comes with the adapter will set up the drivers, I just didn't know if I'd have to configure anything TCP/IP wise manually.

My children have a 450 MHz Pentium 2 machine running 98SE so it's perfectly possible, provided you

• install a software firewall in the machine
• install Firefox and insist that that browser be used rather than Internet Explorer
• update any antivirus you've already got on the machine, or obtain a new AV solution - several free ones are available
• install a number of antispam programs - several free ones are available
• reinstalling without Internet Explorer (98Lite) provided you have all the available updates to reinstall

98SE can be relatively safe with these precautions. Networking is not too hard to set up - you'll only need TCP/IP. Try reading http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814239/ if you've never done this before, bearing in mind that you should "obtain an IP address automatically" as you have a router.

That's interesting , just wondering why firefox rather than IE6 and why is a PCI card safer than a usb ethernet adapter ?

Internet explorer is the target of malware writers to a far greater extent than Firefox.

Nobody is claiming that. It is likely to be more reliable and also easier to install and setup
