Use NTL cablemodem withADSL wireless Dlink router?

[link to this post]

Hello I have a Ntl 205 cable modem,is it posible to connect it to a ADSL Dlink router which has wireless capability in it.
My only concern is how do i connect my cable modem 205 to the Adsl router and then make it to connect wirelessly.
I want to know the physical and network settings that i should take care of in order to achieve this.
My Adsl wireless router is DSL-G604T.
Thanks in advance any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't think it's possible. The d-link device contains components (dhcp client, dns client etc) which will look to its own WAN port. But you can't use its WAN port as this is linked to its internal modem and is exposed to the outside world via the ADSL interface.

It is possible to use some routers as switches, by using only its LAN connections, but you lose any firewalling capabilities it has. You do also need some routing capability to link your LAN to the WAN, and I don't know if the cable modem (a genuine modem is not a router, but some so-called modems are in fact routers. ) does this. The d-link using only its LAN connectors won't either.

Home gateway devices come in two flavours - "adsl" and "cable/dsl". You need the second sort, but you have the first sort.

I am talking from half-remembered stuff, but I think you need to do something on the lines of:-

Disable DHCP in the DLink;
Set the DLink IP Address to something on the same subnet as the modem but different, e.g. if the modem is 192.168.1.1, make the DLink something like 192.168.1.50;
Connect a DLink router LAN port to the cable modem.

Hi, you cannot use a broadband ADSL router, because it has a modem that only connects to a BT type telephone line. Only a broadband cable/DSL router can be connected to your NTL cable modem.

But he won't be using the modem in the DLink, it will not be connected to anything. The router and wireless bit will still work. So he just has to make sure his PCs have the cable modem as their Gateway.

What you are proposing is basically turning the ADSL router into an access point. This will possibly work for a single device however not for multiple devices as the routing is done between the WAN port (ADSL) and the switch/wireless part.

Ok

He already has the DLink set up and working on ADSL. Presumably as well as letting both PCs connect to the net he has them networking. So what if he connects one of the PCs directly to the cable modem, enables Windows connection sharing on that PC. Tells the other PC to connect through it. Disables DHCP as before on the DLink?

Shouldn't that work, though needing the internet-connected PC to be on for the other to get to the net?

Should do but not the ideal setup, ICS is a PITA and is generally to be avoided if possibe.
