Linking laptop to wireless router

[link to this post]

Hi guys,

Was wondering if anyone on here may be able to offer some advice!

I've recently being given a laptop from work and i am trying to connect it to my wireless router at home. However i am a bit thick when it comes to things like this and to cut a long story short it aint working!

The IT guys in work said that as the laptop has wireless built in, i should just have to turn it on and look in wireless connections, find my router and connect!

Problem is my router aint in the list. Do i have to do anything with the settings on the router, or is it something else.

Sorry for the noobish question guys, but when it comes to wireless i aint got a clue!

The SSID is set to "Default" on the router.

I basically havn't done anything other than bring the laptop home and switch it on!

I know.......i'm an idiot!

Do i have to enable wireless on the router then????

Below is what the settings are at the moment on the router.........

Network ID(SSID) Default
Channel 11
Hide SSID Broadcast Enable
Security Disable
WEP
802.1x and RADIUS
WPA-PSK
WPA

Hide SSID Broadcast Enable

That's what your problem is... the router is not broadcasting the SSID, so it doesn't show up in the list on the laptop. Either Disable this setting (not a security risk IMHO), and refresh the list on the laptop, or manually enter the wireless settings on the laptop.

After reading the instructions i have changed the SSID to WLAN then saved and re-booted the router. However, still not joy!!!

What am i doing wrong!!!!!!!

I have connected the laptop via an ethernet and it works ok with the PC connected as well.

You still haven't said whether you have pysically turned on the wireless adapter in your PC. The default is - Off.
