wireless router with ntl cable modem

A friend has an NTL cable modem and wants to get a wireless router...now obviously he can get a general broadband wireless router with a WAN port and connect the cable modem to this via ethernet, but is it possible to use an adsl wireless router and just not use the adsl side of things (as i have one spare).

Would it work by connecting the cable modem to 1of the 4 lan ports and disabling the dhcp server on the adsl router..so the cable modem is doing the routing?

Only as long as the Cable modem has routing capability which makes it a router with a built in modem- not a modem.

A cable modem is just that a modem not a router. It possibly may work using the ADSL router as a switch with built in wireless by disabling DHCP. This however will only work for a single device.
