Convert wired router into wireless?

Hi everyone,

Firstly, please excuse me if this is a dumb question (!) Basically, I've got a WIRED Netgear DG834 modem/router and would like to go wireless. My question is: can I buy some sort of wireless adaptor for the modem that plugs in the ethernet port(s) to, in effect, enable a wireless network?

Or, if this is not possible, or too expensive, should I just buy the WIRELESS DG834g? Help much appreciated, cheers.

What you want is called an Access Point, though many of us prefer to say Wireless Access Point, as it makes it clear it's the wireless functionality you're after.

I've never used one myself, so I can't recommend anything. Google for "access point", and you'll find a device with an ethernet port that'll plug into one of your router's LAN sockets.

You may well find that a new wireless router is not very much more costly . . . . and will be marginally easier to set up than this "separates" option.

Cheers for all your help. Looking at the prices for wireless access points compared to a straight up wireless routers, I think I might as well go for the latter, and try and flog my old dg834 on ebay.

Yep, go for a new Netgear DG834G V3 wireless-G ADSL2+ router, the price of wireless access points is astronomical.

I like having a seperate access point, I can site this anywhere in the house for best coverage but the router (which I change often) stays near to the phone point. Currently using a Linksys access point which is easy to setup. The best thing is I can change routers without having to set the wireless up every time (which can be tedious on some routers). However the cost of a wireless router is similar to the cost of the access point alone so you might as well plumb for the combined unit.
