When connected to a router via ethernet, none of my Windows systems show a connected icon (using 98, Me, XP). What will show under XP is the media not-connected icon should the other end not be there or cable failed.

Unless you tick the box for 'show icon in notification area when connected' (on XP) then the icon will show all the time. This is what the OP is after but like others I don't think this is an option in 98SE.

OK, with that bit of information (which I'd forgotten), I'm in entire agreement: W98 doesn't have the feature.
