The OP's model in question, a DG814, is nowhere to be found in the product section of netgears website. The last firmware released was back in 2004.

Strange. I can find plenty of info on the Netgear site about the DG814. True the firmware was last updated some time ago but by that time it was pretty solid - I do not recall any major outstanding issues (I used to use one before going wireless).

Going back to the OP's question: I have successfully used VPN with the DG814 without problem The one basic question I have yet to see asked: Is the latest firmware installed on the router?

Edit: Correction - I could only get VPN working after changing the default DMZ settings.
