XP Home Edition file sharing with wireless...

Just built a PC for my kids which will use wireless, and have my PC which is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable.

Both PCs can see each other if I view workgroup computers.
I can access the default shares and printers on each PC.
When I setup new shares the wireless PC cannot access the wired PCs new shares, but the wired PC can access the wireless PCs new shares.

If I plug both through ethernet then everything is fine.

I have tried disabling firewall etc, it seems to be something to do with accessing the wired PC from the wireless side.

Help appreciated.

Your subject line mentions XP Home, but is this the OS on all of your PCs? If you can clarify what OS (including the Service Packs applied) each is running this may make it easier to understand what is happening. The Service Pack may be very important - we had a USB wireless adapter which worked in adhoc mode, but stopped working when we got a router and switched to infrastructure mode, apparently due to security enhancements in XP SP2.

If any of your PCs is running XP Professional then you may need to check the share permissions and even then there may be issues.
We have a network with one XP Professional system and the others are XP Home and Windows 98. From the XP Professional system we can see everything else, but we can't browse to shares on the XP Professional system via the Workgroup from XP Home. However, if we can work out the IP address then it is possible to access the shares (using a suitable username/password).

Both are running XP Home Edition SP2 fully patched.

Just to reiterate, the wireless PC can access the default shares, it just cannot access the other folders I have given shared access to for music etc.... however, if connected via an Ethernet cable it is fine.

I am going to try uninstalling the software for the Speedtouch 120G and using the windows own wireless software, failing that I will try a different wireless USB dongle or wireless PCI card.

Right, changed settings from WPA-PSK to WEP, and now I can share the folders.

Must be some setting to do with the WPA that is stopping the file sharing.

I have used WPA OK with XP SP2. Perhaps you didn't have all the machines set to the same security method?

Resolved the issue....

Under WPA it only gave TKIS encryption. Changed router to WPA + WPA2 and TKIS + AES encryption is available. Went onto wireless PC and changed encryption to AES and it is now working!
