Cisco 871 Questions

[link to this post]

Hi all, I was hoping somebody might be able to help me with a couple of issues.

I've been supplied with a Cisco 871w for my home office. I need it to control the internet connection, but I suppose some device has to go between it and the actual phone line because its WAN port is base-t 10/100 rather than phone. The Linksys gateway I've been using for Internet access up until now won't do, because apparently there is no way to make it pass the public IP address to another device. Would I be able to do what I need with a simple ADSL modem - something that doesn't act as a gateway - and if so can anybody recommend what make and model to go for? Performance is an issue, to a certain degree, since this new setup is supposed to support an IP phone and a VPN connection.

I'm with ADSL24 (Entanet) on the upto 8mbps package, with a static IP address.

there are a few devices with assorted bodges to give an external IP to an ethernet device.

etc.

Expect pain.

If it's your employer then tell them to provide an 857 or 877. No need for any cludges with external modems.

Yarwell and Rockh thanks very much for your suggestions. As it happens, I was under quite a bit of time pressure to get this fixed so I'd already ordered a D-Link DSL 320-T by the time you responded. I wasn't at all sure about it, but it arrived today and thankfully appears to be working; the 871 has picked up my external IP address, and everything is running fine.
