2 routers using the same line?

[link to this post]

HI

I have a bt voyager 205 adsl router that works fine but I want to have a wifi one as well for a new computer. Would having 2 routers using the same bt username and password mess things up?

Also would I have to mess around with the wireless router modem thing to get it compatible with bt services or would i have to call bt up and tell them that i'm using a new router?

thanks for any help

You can only use one ADSL modem on the line at any one time. If the new wifi device is a wireless ADSL router why not just dump the Voyager?

Some ISP's routers are locked down with concealed settings (Sky springs to mind). I don't know what the situation is with BT broadband (assuming you are with BT broadband).

I think most ISPs don't restrict your options in that manner. I would pose that question to the forum on this site dedicated to your ISP.

The whole point of a router is to share a bb connection between several computers. So put away your old router and use the new wireless one to provide the connection for both your computers (I'm guessing it's a desktop and a laptop?)

As said by others, you cannot connect two modems to a phone line at the same time. BT don't need to know what you have, nor do you need permission to change your equipment, so long as it has the the relevant green circle to say it's certfied for use in the UK.

If you don't want to dump your old router, then the best way to add wireless capability is to use a wireless access point. But given that you're asking this question, I'd suggest that an all-in-one wireless router will be less problematic to set up. And furthermore, if your present router has only one ethernet socket, then you'd have nowhere to plug in your desktop machine.

Just replace your existing Voyager with the new wireless router. (Assuming that it has a built in ADSL modem?) Let it detect the network settings and then enter [email protected] as the User Name with no password.
