3com adsl router to virgin modem help

hi,

I'm trying to get my router to connect via a virgin broadband modem. I can tunnel through the 3com router but it isn't able to be recognised by the modem, do I need to change the internet settings protocol or something like that? I've got bridge, PPPoA PPPoE and the like to choose from.
The 3com router is happily supplying IP addresses but seems to be overridden by the modem ip addresses (which start 88....) or do i need to clone an address somewhere?

the broadband connection is virgin cable via a f connector down a coaxial cable. the 3com wired/wireless router is an officeconnect adsl wireless 54mbps 11 firewall router

any help?

All you can use teh 3com unit for in this case is as a wireless access point, you will not be able to use the DHCP/NAT server in the 3Com.

If you want multiple computers connected to the VM cable modem, then something like a linksys WRT54GS is what you need, i.e. a router that accepts Ethernet for the Internet (labelled WAN sometimes) connection.

Hi Jeremy, the router you require for connection to the supplied Virgin Cable Modem is a Cable/DSL router also misleadingly termed as a Broadband router.
The only consolation a Cable/DSL router is cheaper to buy because it does not have an inbuilt modem as does the ADSL router.

As MrSaffron has indicated your current 3Com ADSL router can be used configured in [Bridge Mode] as a wireless access point and connected to the required Cable/DSL router.

NOTE: The Mbps quoted for wireless routers is different to that for broadband connections.

For wireless routers the figure is the sum of theoretical up and down speeds. So 54Mbps will manage potentially 27Mbps in either direction.

In practice this means they will support downloads of around 15 to 23Mbps.

The 108Mbps solutions are marginally better, and the 300Mbps well not seen any meaningful tests yet, but should be good for the 50Mbps Virgin Media cable broadband.
