Belkin 11N1 is 150.0Mbps with non N1 kit, not 300

[link to this post]

Just to hopefully save others from wasting time trying to get a Belkin "Vision 11N1" (F5D8232) router to run at the advertised 300Mbps (max) with a Belkin 11N client (F5D8013), also 300Mbps.
After much miss-information and wasted time, it turns out that the "11N1" range is only rated at 150Mbps with other (ie non belkin 11N1) 11N equipment - be it Belkin's or anyone elses. This is not stated on the box (well I can't see it), and 300Mbps claim has just the normal provisos.

And also, if you select the "Access Point" mode (no WAN/NAT stuff) the fancy LCD display sits there with pointless upload / download speeds and a clock that claims to be in the year 2000 (and the time is wrong) as it no longer accesses an NTP.

And on a different note, can anyone give me what seems like a Vista or Acer laptop specific reason for the speedtest applet loading and running but then being unable to download the actual test files (a new Acer 5735 with Vista HP and all the updates). The port 80 option does not work either, but another PC on the LAN behind the same Cisco SOHO firewall works fine. I tried both FF and IE and disabling the pre-installed McAfee firewall and also a wired lan connection but none helped. Oddly, on the IE / Tools / Internet Options / Advanced tab I get no "Java" section, but the applets are definately running, just unable to access external data it would seem.

I assume the belkin is 2.4GHz? if so then yes, the official max is 150Mbps. To get 300Mbps you need 5GHz access points and adapters. but in the real world of course you're not going to get throughput of anything close to 300Mbps or even 150Mbps for that matter.

The Belkin "N" and "N1" series are both 2.4G based (well they don't say dual-band anywhere and the AP doesn't have any 5G setup options) and both advertise 300Mbps, so I'm not sure where you get the 150 limit at 2.4 from - surely it depends on aerial counts and use of the 40 width? The problem is that they don't (can't) talk to each other at this theoretical speed (well, not according to Belkin TS, but that is dubious perhaps).

Hi, in TrustedReviews, the Belkin F5D8632UK4A N1 Vision Wireless Modem Router
actual through put in the wireless speed test 48Mbps, this fairs no better than the 3Com
3CRWDR300A-73 ADSL Wireless 11n Firewall Router at 49Mbps in the real world of
wireless networking.

This is no where near what you would expect from a 300 Mbps wireless router. frown

Don't be fooled by the headline 300mbps figures. Just like 54g wireless, your real-world speeds will be nowhere near these numbers. Have a look at these benchmarks for the kind of transfer rates you can more realistically hope to see even using 40MHz bandwidth:

Be sure to check out the average transfer rate figures in addition to the maximum rates linked above.

I've actually got the same problem with the same router... except... on MY laptop it shows that I only have a 150mbps link speed... but on my girlfriends laptop which is sitting right beside mine, she gets 300 mbps... so... what's the deal? same router, same settings...

General Info - I've done a basic test with 54G Kit and get around 1.8MB/s true speed on a large file transfer
