Village wide Broadband

[link to this post]

We have very limited broadband access in our village <0.5MB at best. We may be prepared to pay for improved access, but what options if any are available? Steve.

Leased line and wireless mesh networking? Can be done but is generally not cheap.

As above, I'd call a few different ISP's and find out where your nearest POP (Point of Presence) is for a Leased Line/LES/WES to be installed. You'll pay per mile or km for the cabling to be installed, and a significant amount per year.

You can then use wireless repeaters to extend the wifi signal in the village.

Get the biggest local petition together that you can and forward the result to every politician and BT senior management you can get access to.................your politicians will forward your concerns to BT management requiring a response as well.........together with a covering letter to complain that you all pay exactly the same line rental as folk on decent speeds and any service under 2MB these days makes the 21st cent internet and world wide web a joke and largely unusable.

Don't give up but keep writing and re-writing.

I live in rural Wales and was told that I had no chance of broadband as all lines were shared and I was probably too far from the exchange anyway. There were no plans to put in new lines either and I would have to "wait for someone to die" before I could get a spare line and any possibility of a broadband connection.

I followed the process above till BT were sick of being pestered by all and everyone and although no body died, miraculously a line was found and I have had a 1.5/2.0 MB connection ever since.........even though I was told I would never get more than 0.5mb due to the length of my line

No guarantees but at least you will know you have done all you can...........satellite and wireless connections appear to be too expensive but these people may better advise http://www.broadband-uk.coop/

Can you tell us where you are? Then we can have a look at your specific circumstances.
