BT or Cable?

[link to this post]

Last week we sent a colleague to purchase a Wireless 'N' Router for use in our Internet Caf, having tested an earlier model that proved much more reliable than the 'G' we had been using. They came back with one that had 'Cable' marked on the box but, as it happened, it was faulty and none of the LED's displayed ... not even the power! When we returned the product to Comet, Customer Serrvices acknowledged there was a fault and offered a replacement or refund. We asked if they had a non-cable version in stock but unfortunately they didn't and his offer of a refund was accepted.

What I would like to know is, does it really make a difference whether we use a router identified as 'Cable' if it is intended for use on a BT line? I find this somewhat confusing if, when you phone for technical help on a particular problem, the manufacturer's techie asks whether the router is a cable or BT model. One would have assumed the model number would have been the clue!

The "cable" would imply it doesn't have an ADSL modem, so you can't plug it into a phone line.

Thanks for coming back on this. So, if we connect the router to a CAT5E socket that is linked to an ADSL modem it should work. Am I right? If so I assume it makes no difference whether the service is provided by BT or Virgin ... correct?
