Virgin media network setup

[link to this post]

I'm moving into a new place soon and virgin media 50MB is available there!!

I'm not an expert with networking by any means but here is what I've devised so far:

http://i40.tinypic.com/10mkk0o.png

There isn't a firewall in between the cable modem and the switch (nor am I even sure that setup will work) however as I've never used cable before I'm unsure if the cable modem will have firewall built into it.

I'm thinking i could possibly stick a couple of gigabit nics in the linux server and use it as a firewall however I was planning on using it for a file server.

Does anyone have any pointers or issues with the setup?

You will need a router connected to the cable modem.

You need that to give you NAT otherwise you only have 1 IP address.

You'll be better off replacing the wireless router and the switch with a wireless cable router.

Just curious - which program did you use to draw that?

Put the wireless router where the gigabit switch is and then plug it into the cable modem. Then plug the gigabit switch into the wireless router. Let all other devices fall off the gigabit switch.

Unfortunately, the DG834N won't work - the router needs to have an Uplink port like a Netgear WGR614. That will work.

On 20Mb and 50Mb Virgin supplies a wireless router anyway.

I used to have a very similar setup, except I had the VM supplied router between the modem and the switch and the wireless on the router was disabled as I had a Linksys WAP54G with the 7dBi aerials providing the wifi.

I recently changed the VM supplied router for a Linksys WRT54GS running Tomato, popped the 7dBi aerials over from the WAP54G and decommission it.
Now my network is a lot tidier.
