Well, he doesn't even know what netbook it is, so I'm not confident of any of the info so far crazy

Try with security turned off, if that works then turn security on, but try a simple key e.g. 1234 and see if that works.

Some devices do have issues with WPA, so you may have to fall back to 128 bit WEP

Yeah its a Samsung N110 don't know where I got Toshiba from.
Tried WEP, WPA and no security and nothing, have given up on it at the moment and gone back to the o2 router,

Have you checked what channel the netgear is using - if it is above 11 it may be that the netbook is using US channels which stop at 11.

Just a thought when I put in the WPA key in on the router it is 16 figures long but when I go into the netbook the key is only 8 figures long, I change it to the router figures but it always changes back. Hope you understand what I mean.

This is a red herring. It's a Windows "security feature" which means that all "starred" passwords will appear to be be 16 characters long regardless of real length.
