slow network - splitter/filter issue

Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong area...

basically I am having issues with my broadband being very slow. This is a BT line that the company I work for provide - therefore I cannot change supplier etc...

The main BT connection comes into our house on the first floor (living room). I have an additional 3 extensions in the house. One of the extensions is in my office into which I have a splitter/filter installed and the ADSL model (netgear) plugs into this. In another extension I have my telephone base station plugged in. (The phone system has 3 untis in the house - but is all wire less).

I am getting shockingly slow connection speeds and my network expect thinks you need to have a splitter in each extension to get a better signal - is this true? Also would it make a difference if I plugged the router into the BT point of entry (lounge)?

YEs filters on every connection is essential.
and yes -to improve your connection and remove any faults plug your router into your main phone socket.

It's often useful to know your router stats (attenuations, sync rates, SNR margins). See if your router is covered by http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php or http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

If you check the stats from the test socket within your BT master socket and at your normal location you will see if your home wiring can be improved.

You need a filter on every piece of equipment plugged into the phone line. Every telephone, fax, Sky box, alarm system must go through a filter. The only exception is your ADSL equipment (router/modem), this connects to the unfiltered side of the filter.

Yes - if you only have one filter, then

- that must plug into the master socket
- plug the modem/router into the "modem" socket
- plug all other devices / extensions into the "phone" socket

note that it must be an ADSL filter (not just a passive splitter that came with a dial-up modem).

you can use standard socket doublers (not filters) to branch off only from the "phone" socket of the filter

otherwise if the extensions are wired directly to the master socket, you will have to add filters on all the extensions or look into an ADSL faceplate with a built-in filter.
