Anyone know how I am supposed to wire this??
I was an early adopter of broadband. When BT installed it, they set a socket on my wall which is labelled 'ADSL v1.0'.
The front of this 'ADSL v1.0' box has a standard phone socket and an RJ45/Lan connector socket. From the RJ45 socket a wire runs to another room where there is another BT socket which has just an RJ11 socket. Previously, I had my router connected to this socket.
I now want to remove that socket and the wire that runs to it and connect my router in the same room as the BT ADSL v1.0 box. However, as there is no RJ11 port on it I can't plug my router in.
I opted to change the faceplate on this BT ADSL v1.0 box for a standard ADSL/Phone one from Focus/B&Q but the wiring doesn't correspond...
Inside the BT ADSL v1.0 box is
-- Brown/white stripe (goes to a terminal marked 'A')
-- White/brown stripe (goes to terminal marked 'B')
Then in the next section are three connectors:
-- Blue/white stripes (goes to terminal marked '2')
-- Orange/white stripes (goes to terminal marked '3')
-- White/blue strips (goes to terminal marked '5')
In the face plate I have bought the connectors are merely labelled 1,2,3,4,5,6 and it gives no mention of where to wire the two brown ones.
If I connect as it says (e.g. not connecting the brown wires) - nothing works. So in the meantime I have put it back how it was.
Anyone know how I can wire this to get it working with an RJ11 socket in this room? Do I need a special 'lower half' section to go with this BT socket??

There's no need to replace the original socket. RJ11 plugs fit into RJ45 sockets, they are the same family. Just plug the router RJ11 lead into the RJ45 socket.

Dave - wow - didn't even know you could do that as the RJ11 and RJ45 are different physical sizes. Just tried it and it works beautifully! Thanks

As it's working now I'll probably leave it. However, out of interest, should I opt to change the face plate at some point - on connections 2 & 5 - am I connecting both wires to those connections (i.e. the brown wire and the blue/white)?

NOTE: The IDC connectors on the back of a BT supplied faceplate are ALL filtered, i.e. no scope hardwiring an ADSL extension.
BT do this by plugging an RJ45 which carries the ADSL signal on the center two pins, this also takes an RJ11.
The only re-wiring you can do is for telephone extensions, and you should use blue/white (pin2) and white/blue (pin 5), ala http://www.thinkbroadband.com/images/faq/faceplates/...
If the original poster is using a brown and blue/white wire for their phone extensions, this sounds somewhat odd.

Hi Ben, yes! (connect the brown/white wire with the white/blue) and connect with the old wiring to see if it works, if successful, I would replace the old wiring with the correct colour code.

5 A White/Blue with Brown/white stripe

Except you are then interfering with BT's kit as the A & B terminals on the NTE5 are BT's and should not be touched by the end user or they could end up with a nice bill.

The drop wires to NTE5 master socket, the 'B' wire (Meter Test 50v DC to earth) and the 'A' wire (Meter Test 0v DC to earth).
Then to connect the extention sockets, wire Blue/White from Pin 2, and wire White/Blue from Pin 5, and all extension sockets are linked the same.
For modern telephones you only need to use the 2 wires.
