Broadband without phone line??

[link to this post]

We are thinking about getting broadband at home but without doing the whole tv/phone line package. I know that Virgin do broadband without a telephone line, but are there any other ISPs who provide the same service?
We dont want to go through the whole USB connection as we have tried it and it is way too slow.

Any thoughts / advice welcome.

Not really. For ADSL you really need a BT phone line, for cable you need Virgin.

you could get mobile broadband via 3G through a phone operator,
you could get satellite broadband,
you could get a local wifi solution,

but generally it's either ADSL via a BT phone line or cable via Virgin.

The BT line can be billed through any voice provider who uses Wholesale Line Rental

We have a phone line but as we have just moved in this is not yet connected, I wonder whether its worth going through the whole Sky package to obtain the free 2mb per month, I do not want to go through any phone operators I would rather use the phone line to obtain a good value package that will work without any problems !

I have checked and cable does not run to the area.

Anyone have any experiences/ideas what the better ISP would be in this case?

Cheers

Depends on your requirements, your exchange and if you have Sky TV or not.

We dont have Sky TV as of yet, it is an option.
We will not require maximum usage of broadband, just to check emails now and again and just have the option that it is there if we need it.

Sounds like almost anything will be suitable. Are you planning to use an ISP-provided email account or will you use gmail or hotmail or similar?
Do you have a budget in mind?

To find your exchange, you could try http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Plenty of choice there, everything except wireless ISP's.

You can use a wireless router with any of those ISP's you can get, if you want.

I suggest you ask in the Which ISP section, once you have firmed up on your exact requirements.

But in the first box it says that wireless is not available ?? Would this include routers? Sorry I am not quite up to date with all the technical terms...
