ADSL Extension Sockets

[link to this post]

Hi there,

First time poster here :0)

I was wondering if you could help me with a quick question, first a bit of background....

I have fitted a filtered faceplate on my main BT socket which is working great.

There are two extension sockets in the house - from the main socket to the lounge and then from the lounge to my office upstairs.

I ordered and fitted a pre-filtered extension faceplate for the office upstairs so I can plug my router straight in, in the office. I fixed the cables into the new faceplate as advised in the instructions - 2=2 (orange) and 5=5 (white) into the screw terminals and then plugged my router in. There was no internet connection made.

Is this because there is an un-filtered extension sockect (the one in the lounge) that feeds the one in the office and should I put a pre-filtered extension faceplate in there as well?

Thanks a lot, have a good weekend.

Steve

No it still will not work... the filtered faceplate at the existing Main socket is the only one that will work in that scenario because it is taking the broadband off at that point.
You would have to revert the main socket back to a standard NTE5 front plate to allow the broadband onto the internal wiring, it would then be best to use a normal plug in filter at the extension socket, as using more that one master socket will cause problems with ringing on phones. Also bear in mind that as you will be using the internal wiring now the speed may drop as well.

Are you saying that the filtered faceplate filters off all the ADSL signal? I would have thought the ADSL signal is still present in the electrical impulses going to the other extensions.

The spec of the ADSL Nation XTE-2005 filtered faceplate says:
IDC terminals on the rear allow connection of additional filtered and unfiltered hardwired telephone extensions.

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU BB => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU BB

That filter does indeed have terminals where you can add both filtered (ADSL signal is not passed through) and unfiltered (ADSL *is* passed through) extensions.

I believe one bank is white and one bank is blue. The instructions clearly tell you which.

Thanks for your feedback all, I did manage to get it working.

As Matt said, the blue A & B terminals on the XTE-2005 will send an unfiltered singal through to the extenstions, and this is what I was using. But was not getting anything through to the extension socket.

The problem I had was that the screw in terminals of the extension socket were not getting a clean connection. After stripping back the sheathing to give a clean connection all is now working great.

In fact, I'm now getting speeds better than I've ever had and withouth having to have cables running up the stairs.

Thanks again for the help

So the XTE is now basically redundant?

Yeah, pretty much.

I'll keep it there though as a backup in case I have any problems with the extension socket in the office or if I decide to move the router.

It's been a learning curve for me this as I've done plenty of networking in the past but it's been a long time since I've done anything with telephone sockets.

Cheers
