Home networking help - 40m distance

OK I'll set the scene, I have had an outbuilding erected at the bottom of my garden where I want to network my ADSL connection to from my home.

I will be connecting up the outbuilding to my home electricity direct from the fuse board and down the garden. The outbuilding will have its own fuse board their too.
The distance the new electricity cable will travel is approx 40m in total, the internal distance to the router from the main fuse board is a further 10m (approx).

Will the ADSL connect reach down the electricity line so I can hard wire it in to the plug or do you think there is a maximum distance it will travel?

Homeplugs should be good for 300M although speed is likely to suffer anywhere near this.

So long as both fuse boards are on the same meter then it's likely to work ok.

Of course, If your garden is soft land then a Cat5 would be easy enough to run!

Yeah but the cat5 would need some piping to be fed through due to risk of weather and/or animal/insect wearing. We're not doing that with the electric cable since it is already armoured.

Does it extend the throughput if there are more extension plug points in the house thereby strengthening the internal network more or would it not matter?

Homeplugs can cause interference even to the adsl signal, personally i would either a wireless signal booster or use a cat 5 cable

My Devolo units do not work well on the end of a long lead (i.e particularly poor to the building at the bottom of my garden). I see no reason why a different make should should be any different.

As others have said - if you can lay a Cat5 network cable, then I would go for that.

As per your thread in FC - you could run normal PVC jacketted Cat5 and it should be OK, I've seen it done many times before!

If it was my property, I'd probably run some conduit under the garden which you run the armoured power cable and cat5 in along with a spare puller so you can always pull cables through in future should you need to. This way, should you ever need to run cables down there e.g. CCTV / Alarm / Anything you've not thought of yet then you can.

Obviously, Cat5 and power shouldn't be run paralel but run Cat6 and even with the interference you're gonna get better throughput than the homeplugs.

AIUI, The homeplugs are under patent still so all use the same chips. As such, all units will permorm to a similar standard.

I'd be dubious of those particular Homeplugs, 26 out of 45 feedback give only a one star rating.

I've noticed that too.

Do you know - Do 4 homeplugs behave like a 4 port hub or a 4 port switch? (or just worse than both?)
