Well that's part of it, but really just what you ground it to?

I could easily rig up a connection from a 240V socket, but I wouldn't normally even consider such things, as in my mind that's not a great idea. I don't tend to mess around with mains power from anything other than mains power. smile

Based on what I've read, grounding at both ends can result in earthing loops, while one end seems better, however many recommend both ends...confused

...and are we talking of the outer sheath only or the individual sheaths for each pair? smile

Never used the stuff so have many unanswered questions.

I have a sneaky suspicion that I'll be using solid Cat6 UTP. The stuff with the plastic seperator within. Seems best, and removes the need for all this added thought for probably little gain.

Anyone have any reliable sources for such cable btw?

NOOO, never ground both ends of a screened cable, you end up will hum loops and problems.

As for an earth I'd run in one from the consumer unit but if the sockets are recessed with metal back boxes you could take one from there if the first option was impractical.

As for where to get it, can't recommend anywhere as I have access to miles of cat 5e.

How much do you need?

10m or 300 m ?

Full drum I can point you to a supplier - single lengths, I'll think about where.

20Mtr absolute min (have rough measured about 18.5 to 19.0). So 20Mtr, but will settle for 25Mtr if it's the preferred supply length. No colour requirements at all, but want it to be the solid core variety if possible.

Excel-networking seems to be rated very highly, I am sure they do the STP range too... not keen on their patch cables though actually. What about staying with STP but just not grounding it?

Not that I know anything, very ignorant and clueless when it comes to this, just passing on what I have read as I did some research into this a few months back (and you're right, I could find no mention of a practical instance where anyone has actually grounded their STP cables..)

Quick question for all.

I've got all the kit, but I've to hardwire into the RJ45 module (it's being plugged with RJ11 plug, so only two wires used).

http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/images/c/cc/RJ45Module.jpg

Eight contacts, two wires. Which of the eight contacts? Hmmm. smile

Which two contacts do you want to wire too in the plug?

The middle two contacts would be 4 and 5, which would normally be the Blue/WhiteBlue pair.

The next pair out (3 and 6) would be green or orange depending on wether you use T568A or T568B cabling standard (respectively)

Or you could wire the RJ45 module using Cat5 cable consistently at either end and not actually have to worry about it.

http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/adsl_faceplate_mod.htm

Connecting the A and B contacts on the back of the master to the eight contacts on the back of the RJ45 module. Which two of the eight contacts. My only guide is a 586B sticker, which is wire colours, in this format.

Green bckgnd with white text - 3 1 - Blue bckgnd with white text
White bckgnd with green text - 3 1 - White bckgnd with blue text
Orange bckgnd with white text - 2 4 - Brown bckgnd with white text
White bckgnd with orange text - 2 4 - White bckgnd with brown text

You get the idea here:

http://cpc.farnell.com/productimages/farnell/standar...

I'm using a full CAT6 cable, and will be sticking to the phone wiring colours for the POTS module (three wires), and will use two other wires for the A & B contacts. Obviously the RJ45 module would normally have eight wires. Not in this case, as I'm just extending the unfiltered ADSL from the master to another room, and am using two wires. Which two module contacts.

Sorry if I said all that many times, but it can be easily misunderstood. smile

No numbers 1-8 on the module. See my other post above. smile
