02 Slow Speed at Random times

[link to this post]

I have posted this problem on the offical 02 forum but couldnt really get any help and was blame on my equipment.

Due to master socket position I am wireless connection using a USB adapter because this problem only occur random and unpredicted times. I have 2 pc 1 laptop and a Xbox360 all connected wireless to the 02 Router at daytime everything seems to be fine it mainly happens during at night to be honest with you.

This sitution is happening now at the moment I only have 1 pc on which is the one im using now I've done a speed check and only getting around 1.1mb speed i cannot get access to the router since it wont loads.

I have just decided to connect my laptop using a ethernet cable to see if this problems occurs and as a result the speed is fine on speed test back to normal around 5-6mb speed and I can get access to the router page which everything seems fine.

Im back on my pc im using now and still getting the slow speed, what could be causing this, i tried reinstalling adapters n drivers, wireless channels etc. i dont really know what actually interferring with the wireless, this didnt normally happen back when i first sign up for 02 but only starting occuring for the pass 3-4 months which is very annoying indeed, especially when im home turn on pc only to find my wireless connection is dodgy again and everyone in the house is complaining about cant loading certain pages

Wireless signal hasnt been a problem in the house everyone gets max signal i also do alot of online gaming with my brother and lagging is also a issue very frustating indeed. It just seems that it comes around then disappear the next day

The O2 box has rubbish wireless.
As to why it is slow, there are a multitude of things which can cause it to be so. It's a shared medium so will slow down the more devices you have connected to it.
There could be a neighbour who is on the same channel as you. Try changing the channel on the O2 box and see if that makes any differance. Inssider is a nice bit of software which will tell you what wireless devices are around you.

I think i have to agree with you that the 02 box is poor apparently they realsing a new 02 box IV soon with there new package, I use the Inssider my neigbour got a netgear router on channel 11 where as im on channel 1 so that shouldnt be a problem Im changing ISP soon since my 02 contract is out possible Xilo or Viviciti

What router would you recommend me to have? i heard some decent review about the DGN2000 but it the price is bit heavyfrown

Hi. A few questions for you:

Are you on O2 access or LLUed?
Can you post your router stats which may help diagnosis?
How frequently do you reboot the router?
Do you have any other devices connected to the phoneline such as a sky box?

Im on LLU, dont have sky box connected, I dont reboot my router i used to turn if off to save power but i leave it now and realise the max days it went on without rebooting itself is around 4 days, normally now it reboots 1 or twice per day. below is router stats

Uptime: 0 days, 21:37:40
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,282 / 5,310
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 17.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 19.0 / 35.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 8.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 58 / 119,382
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 58 / 73
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 4,024 / 52

I done these check before but apparently everything seems fine, I am wireless btw and atm 2 pc and 1 laptop connected the router all wireless

So from your line stats with a wired connection you are getting about the right speed so it is purely a wireless issue.
Perhaps homeplug networking might provide the solution.

As for a replacement router, can't really comment as I use a cisco router with my O2 router in bridge mode.

Thanks for posting the stats.

Entering your stats here BE Speedtouch stats analysis

Suggests that you might have an issue with noise on your line.

Do you have a test socket on your phone line you can connect via to establish if the problem is internal or external? If so, then can you repost your stats via the test socket.

The O2 box has a slow and not very powerful processor and does get overwhelmed if it has to work too hard. I think that with 3 wireless connections and possibly doing lots of error correction may be proving too much for it to cope with. Can you also try copying a file from one PC to another and check if the internal LAN wireless speed is the same as the external WAN.
