Mobile phone wifi oddity

When I connect my Nokia X6 to our office network other users get connection problems. They get redirected to a page that says something like "Third party router detected" and offers to relocate it into the DMZ.

It seems to be a feature of the 2-Wire modem that BT provided. We've found a way fix the problem (there's an option to disable the alert) but I'm curious as to what's actually going on. It sounds like the router is pushing my modem outside the local network but presumably it still has to share the same public IP address that the router is using. Also - is this normal for networks? Is the 2Wire just unusual in bleating about it?
