I have three virtual servers configured in the firewall, for ports 21, 80 and 3389, but attempting to access the machine associated with these using its DNS name results instead in a connection to the router. Does anyone know how to configure one of these routers so that I can access (say) my local web server using its DNS name without having to insert the local IP address of that machine in the HOSTS file of each machine connected to the router ?

I think you have to enable NAT loopback in the router.

Hmmm, I can find nothing in the current firmware (V3.0.1) that will allow that, and all attempts to locate the most recent firmware (3CRWDR200A-75_v3.6.16.exe, allegedly at http://csoweb4.3com.com/wireless_update/default.cfm?... just lead to an HP "Page not found" message. I may have to try another thread, asking if anyone has downloaded and saved 3CRWDR200A-75_v3.6.16.exe
But thank you anyway !

AS BatBoy has said this is very likely to be a loopback problem and lots of routers do not support what you are tryung to do.
( Buy a DrayTek )
A work round (assuming you are using a Windows PC), is to put an entry in the Windows hosts file to point the "DNS name" of the server to the local IP address.

Line Two:- EntaNet - DrayTek Vigor 2600

I downloaded the new firmware for my 3Com 3CRWDR101A-75 router, with no problems.

Hi, contact Hewlett Packard, there is a website issue with downloading that firmware Surely it's 3Com's website issue as it is they that are redirecting invalidly to HP?

Whatever. Anyhow, I have lodged a complaint (sorry, "reported an issue") using E7er's form link (https://my.procurve.com/HELP/help_questions.aspx?l2id=50&SelectedTab=4), and will report back when/if I get an answer. In the meantime I have asked elsewhere in this forum if anyone has a cached copy, and am still hoping for a positive reply !
But does anyone else yearn for the good old days when HP made world-leading oscilloscopes (and similar test equipment), and had the trust of the entire industry ? Ah, those were the days ...

By courtesy of a very helpful lady within HP, I now have a copy of 3CRWDR200A-75_v3.6.16_WW.exe, and I am in the process of clarifying with her whether the _WW suffix indicates a regional variant, and if so, for which region(s) it is suitable.
In view of HP's extremely prompt and helpful response, I unreservedly withdraw my earlier remarks which cast both 3Com & HP in a bad light, and I apologise to them for my lack of good faith.
