Relocating BT master socket

[link to this post]

I'm getting some work done on the house I've just bought and I've had the electrician install RJ45 sockets and cat5e cabling throughout, but now I need to move the BT master socket (currently mounted inside the front door) to a position next to one of the RJ45 sockets so as to connect the router to the home network.

The cable to the master socket running outside the house has been cut so I'm guessing that the BT engineer will need to run a new line from the telegraph pole into my house? Also, how much work are BT engineers willing to do to install the line? The reason I ask is that I've had my electrician install a flush-mounted backbox (beside an RJ45 socket) to which the BT guy can mount the master socket but the backbox is a few metres from the front-door so I reckon floorboards would need to be lifted to get the phone line cable into the backbox. Would be BT engineer be happy to do that? Or would I have to prepare it all for him?

I should add that I'm not a natural DIY-er.

You will need to lift the floor boards and replace them after. BT techs will not undertake channelling into walls, lifting carpets, lifting floors &c and they can be wary about drilling through internal walls.

It is easy enough to get a drawstring into the box and under the floor to the point where the cable will enter - just have a small section raised. The BT tech can then just pull through.

Looks like costly, as they will be repairing that cut cable on the outside first, then a shift order will be required. £150+ at a guess.

Talk to the firm who you pay voice line rental to, to arrange this shift of the NTE5

BT are providing the line which is a new line for £29.99 and a tie-in to an 18 month contract. I think the answer to my question has been provided, so I'll need to lift the carpet, floorboards in readiness for the BT guy.

a possibility would be. if you have access under the house and you have air bricks the engineer could run the cable down an external wall then through the air brick if you are willing to manoeuvre it under the floor to the desired flushbox, either up the cavity or through the floor and up the wall.

there are different rules regarding installation ie classic or wlr3. also position of the main within your house with regards to the pole.

wlr3 states we gain access via the nearest and most convenient point then the master is fitted within 3m of that point, dependant on the provider there may be banding (time paid for) to run an extension to the place the EU would like it.

classic provides are more flexible in that we can run cables on external walls to a point that most suits that particular provision task.

in all cases it will depend on the engineer as he holds the majority of the cards, general rules apply as to all things, be pleasant and helpful and in return you may get what you want. be prepared to compromise though as sometimes requests may be too time consuming or simply not possible,

i always look to get maximum impact as efficiently as possible but sometimes this does not always suit the EUs full requirements. all we want to do when on a provide or a fault is give the best possible solution for both the network and the EU (end user) in the best time possible. whilst maintaining the quality standards laid out.

Very sage advice and a very useful answer - thanks.
