I hangout over at the newsgroups at grc.com and we have been beta testing the DNS Benchmark application which has now been officially released. In my, admittedly somewhat biased, opinion it is the best DNS test tool I have used. DNSBench.exe is a small, free application that will run under Windows or Wine on other operating systems.

Gibson Research Corporation has lots of other tools and information but this one is top of the pile.
