Can anyone help?
I have an asdl wireless router which shows lights for both wlan and lan working, but the wire connection will not connect.

You'll need to call up the Network & sharing center and view the status of the Local area connection (if present).
Or you can open a command prompt and type "ipconfig" to see which adapters are in use. It might be working from the router's point of view, but it might not be configured correctly in Windows.

Thanks,
Have tried both.
Had Dell check out my PC and everything works. Called Talk Talk and they gave advice that did not work either, and despite repeated requests have not come back to me!

Unfortunately you''ll find more often than not that that is the norm.
EDIT
Make sure you know the username and password and back up any settings you have made, then do a factory reset on the router and see if it connects to the PC through the ethernet cable.
What OS (operating system) is on the PC, e.g. Windows XP, Visa, 7 ?

Yes and the LAN (ehternet) light is on on the router and on the PC, but no luck with a connection.

Yes and the LAN (ehternet) light is on on the router and on the PC, but no luck with a connection. So, you appear to be saying you can get on the internet using a wireless connection to the router but you cannot get onto the internet using a wired connection to the router.
In that case, I suspect the PC's network settings for the wired connection are in error.
That was my thinking. Possibly router IP / default gateway not matching IP address issue.

Oh. Can you tell me how I solve it?
Pop "ipconfig/all" into a command prompt and confirm that for the wired adapter connection:
The IP address and the Default Gateway are on the same network.
I would normally advise a ping to the default gateway or to 127.0.0.1, but I have no idea of the wireless setup and its associated settings and whether or not it will be giving the response.
The subnet mask is appropriate for the IP Address. For example, if the IP starts 192.xxx.xxx.xxx then 255.255.255.0 is the correct mask.
To be honest it might be easier if you PM me your ipconfig/all data. At least that way I can let everyone else know whether or not it's valid and proper.

This data from your wireless connection is good:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
I would got into the network sharing center, right click the local area connection, select properties and specify the same settings. If that won't work, try changing the local area connection's IP address to 192.168.1.3 instead.

Thanks, tried this but no luck.

Can you post another ipconfig /all please?
Are you trying to used wired and wireless at the same time on the same machine?
Have you tried reinserting the cable or a known working cable?
Odd that it assigning Tiscali DNS server IP's on the LAN.
Have you logged in to the router and checked that DHCP is switched on for the LAN?
can you confirm the ip address you are getting please?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.14.126(Preferred)
there's your problem. 169.254.14.126

can you confirm the following please (forget about router lights and assumptions for now).
1. connect wirelessly then navigate to a web page that you have not visited before. (this will eliminate the chance of the page being stored in your cache).
-------------
disconnect your router from the modem. and the router from the pc; so there is no connection
open a command prompt
type ipconfig /release
reconnect the modem / router etc.
type ipconfig /renew
Go to your control panel and locate admin tools. restart your dns and dhcp servers
ensure that - wired auto config is set to automatic
btw. you can close that command prompt.
check to see if you are still getting a 169.254 apipa address.
