router security - Help

I have recently swapped ISP so have dug out an old router netgear dg834g v4.

I set it up sucessfully and have been online ok since friday.

stupidly today I decided I should sort out the security on the router. well I now cannot even connect to the router let alone the internet (currently using dongle)

I have checked in my keychain and am sure I am using the correct password but no joy.

Help!!

and should it be WEP? WPA? and how do I set it up? I have reset the router but no joy

Have you connected the DG834Gv4 to the PC using an ethernet cable, if so then after a factory reset try to login using:-

The user name is admin and the default password is password

Edit: use WPA at least

Unfortunately no eithernet ports on my MBA

Providing you reset the router by sticking a pin in the back hole for about 10 secs. till test light blinks, the default username/password should be admin/password. Change password to a harder one immediately.

Use Wireless Settings to set recommended Authentication of WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key) with a difficult key.
EDIT: You might need a more recent version of firmware for this method.

I have reset it but when I try to connect with my browser it won't even load the page so I can't access the router to reconfigure.

You need an Ethernet connection to start with. I don't think Wireless is even enabled by default, but you could try with the Key = the SN on the bottom of the router providing you can see its network.

If you can't borrow a note/netbook and a cable can you take the router to a friend or work etc that has ethernet capability? Set up the WAP at least there and then you should be good to go.
